March 12, 2026 (Source: Reuters) - An employee of a contracted company died on Thursday following an incident at Rio Tinto's (RIO.AX) Kennecott mine in Utah, the world's largest producer of iron ore said on Friday without providing further details. Operations at the Kennecott mine site have been suspended following Thursday's ?accident, the Anglo-Australian miner said, while its CEO Simon Trott said he would ?travel to Kennecott. February 26, 2026 (Australian Mining) - Austral Resources’ plan to refurbish its Rocklands sulphide processing hub has been given a funding boost, with the Queensland Government investing $15 million in the project as part of its strategy to restore copper confidence in the state’s north-west. Delivered through the Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC), the funding will see the Rocklands hub near Cloncurry lay the foundation for production to resume in the next two years. The Rocklands copper mine was previously placed into care and maintenance in 2024, with the current refurbishment of operations taking place ahead of a planned restart of copper sulphide production in 2027. The state government said Rocklands is expected to deliver up to 26,300 tonnes
February 26, 2026 (Australian Mining) - Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King has indicated the Australian Government is supportive of the potential reopening of Tasmania’s Mount Lyell copper mine , which has been on care and maintenance since 2014. King recently met with mine owner Sibanye-Stillwater and was advised that the company has completed its feasibility study into restarting operations. “There will be a board decision on this this year and I’m hoping that’s sooner rather than later, as I imagine the good people of Tasmania and Burnie and everywhere around would agree,” King said in an interview with ABC Radio . “The local office of Sibanye-Stillwater is doing a lot of work to ensure the Mount Lyell mine has the potential to reopen.”
