SnapshotThe Bull Mountain Mine is permitted to produce 15 million tons of raw coal per year. The primary facilities include the underground mining operation, a centralized coal preparation plant, fixed conveyor systems, storage systems, and a railroad loadout station.

In February 2023, the Signal Peak EIS was vacated and they cannot mine the reserves while they update the EIS. The Bull Mountains Mine is operated by Signal Peak under Permit C1993017, issued by Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), in accordance with its state mine permit. Essentially, Signal Peak is suing the government on the Builder Act case to get the EIS complete, but Signal Peak has enough coal to stay running through 2025.

The overburden and the underburden of the Bull Mountains Mine consist of layers of rock including clinker, sandstone, silty sandstone, coal, siltstone, and claystone. Typically, these layers are thin and alternate between the various lithologies. The seam being mined is the Mammoth coal seam, and the coal is sub-bituminous.
