SnapshotThe Mardie Salt and Potash Project will be the largest solar salt project in Australia and the third largest globally.

The Optimized Feasibility Study was published on April 21, 2021. The updated base case financial model for project was released on June 20, 2023.

The project will comprise nine evaporation ponds, salt and SOP crystallisers plus salt washing and SOP process plants. Product will be shipped onto capsize vessels from jetty with a conveyor system.

A main construction commenced in early 2022.

Full-scale operations commenced on 15 April 2025. Salt construction 61 per cent complete. Secondary seawater intake, ponds six to nine, and the haul road were completed.

As at May 2025, SOP FEED studies are underway to understand the full operational flowsheet, cost and schedule. A decision on the SOP Plant is due after completion of the FEED. Early design for a pilot plant has commenced to test the design at Mardie before committing to a full-scale production plant.

Summary:

The Project area straddles the coastal plain and salt marshes, extending offshore across tidal flats and into the shallow marine environment along the Pilbara coast. The coastal plain in the Project area is a broad expanse of low-lying alluvium sloping gently seawards, fringed by tidal flats, mangroves, sand dunes and sandy shoals.
