The Thakurani operations lie in the south eastern part of the Singhbhum-Keonjhar-Bonai iron ore belt, a narrow NNE-SSW directional trending folded syncline that runs through northern Odisha, India and southern Jharkhand, India. The Precambrian horseshoe shaped belt is a well known iron ore province hosting many iron ore deposits. The enriched sequence is a traditional Banded Iron Formation that has been subject to significant weathering that has enriched the iron ore deposits. Ore is generally of the friable hematite type however more competent hematite ores and friable goethite ores are also present.Thakurani Iron Ore Mine, located in Noamundi Iron Ore deposits forms a part of the eastern limits of the regional synclinorium. The banded iron ore formations of the Iron Ore Group cover the major part of the area. The northern slope of the area is occupied by Banded Hematite Jasper (BHJ). In the central part of the area, that is the ridge, BHJ is overlain by 5-73m thick band of hematite rock which is capped by a mantle of laterite and lateritic soil near the surface. The laterite & soil capping varies in thickness from a meter to as much as 10 meters in southern part of the area. The iron ore of this area is mainly hematite in nature with minor quantity of goethite, siderite, specularite and limonite – the basement rock being Banded Jasper Quartzite. The ores are intercalated with chart and shale. The Ghoraburhani – Sagasahi operations lie in the southwestern part of the Singhbhum-Keonjhar-Bonai iron ore belt. The enriched sequence is a traditional Banded Iron Formation that has been subject to significant weathering and deformation that has enriched the iron ore deposits. Ore is generally of lateritic iron ore/ hard laminated ore on the top followed by soft laminated ore and friable hematite with intercalations of friable shaly ore and limonitic ore are also present.
