Snapshot	To support the transition to burning 100% natural gas at Genesee power plant 1 and 2 in 2024, excess coal inventory was extracted prior to the conclusion of coal mining at Genesee in the fourth quarter of 2023. In 2024, Capital Power recorded decommissioning provisions for the Genesee coal mine (the Genesee Mine) as it was obliged to remove the facilities at the end of their useful lives and restore the mine sites to their original condition. Decommissioning provisions for the Genesee Mine were incurred over time as new areas were mined, and a portion of the liability is settled over time as areas are reclaimed prior to final pit reclamation. The timing of reclamation activities could vary and the decommissioning provisions could change depending on potential future changes in environmental regulations and cost estimates. Westmoreland Coal Company became a privately held company on March 15, 2019. The company has not publicly reported 2018-2020 Genesee Mine production data.

Summary:

There are up to six coal seams (layers) of coal at Genesee Mine located at varying depths. There are typically between 3 and 5 mineable coal seams ranging between 4 and 6 metres in combined thickness. The interburden (layer of dirt and sandstone) between the coal seams varies in thickness.

The coal at Genesee is “sub-bituminous” meaning it is low in sulphur and burns hotter than other varieties of coal which makes it ideal for electricity production.
