[Translated from Spanish]The rocks outcropping in the El Coronel area are represented by igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. The igneous rocks are extrusive, with rhyolitic and basaltic compositions, as well as intrusive types. The sedimentary rocks are of marine origin from the Lower Cretaceous and continental in nature, including lacustrine limestones from the Tertiary and relatively recent valley fill sediments. The metamorphic rocks include slates, schists, and phyllites. Thus, the rock assemblage exposed in the project area spans a probable age range from the Paleozoic to the Recent. The outcropping rocks in the area include some intrusive bodies and volcanic packages composed of tuffs overlain by rhyolites. The sedimentary rocks form small hill ridges composed of limestones, clayey limestones, calcareous shales, and sandstones with variable bedding thicknesses, ranging from laminar to massive. Based on their lithology and stratigraphic position, these rocks are correlated with the Caracol, Indidura, and Cuesta del Cura formations.
