The Peak Downs Mine is located over a section of the Moranbah Coal Measures sub-cropping beneath a thin horizon of residual sand, clay and sandy-clay soils within the Quaternary alluvium. The Moranbah Coal Measures dip to the east at 3 to 5 degrees and are comprised of sandstone, shale, mudstone and coal. The consolidated thickness of coal in the Moranbah Coal Measures ranges from 12 m to 24 m and consists of up to eight seams: from the basal Dysart Main and Upper seam plies to the shallower Q and R seams.Moranbah Coal Measures of Late Permian age dipping at 2–12° to the east; up to eleven coal seams/major seam splits are present. They are the S, R, Q, P1, P2, Harrow Creek Upper and Lower, DysartK, Dysart Upper 1 and 2, and the Dysart Lower 2 seams. Mining is mainly confined to the Harrow Creek and Dysart seam sequences, which average 4–5m each in thickness.Bituminous coal is mined from the Permian Moranbah Coal measures Products range from premium-quality, low-volatile, highvitrinite hard coking coal to medium-volatile hard coking coal, to weak coking coal and medium ash thermal coal as a secondary product. The Peak Downs Continuation Project (Project) is located in the central part of the Bowen Basin. The Bowen Basin is the northern extension of the Permian age Sydney-Gunnedah Bowen Basin which contains fluvial and shallow marine sediments with extensive coal measures. The Fair Hill formation containing the Fort Cooper Coal Measures overlays the Moranbah Coal Measures within the Project area. The Moranbah Coal Measures contain the key seams to be targeted by the Project (Dysart and Harrow Creek coal seams). The Project area landscape can be described as moderately to gently undulating hills and plains. The soil types found within the northern part of the Project area can be described as grey self-mulching cracking clays, with the southern part of the Project area described as hard pedal yellow/mottled-yellow duplex soils.
