Hinatuan Mining Corporation (HMC) started its commercial operations of nickel ore from Manicani Island in 1992. However, operations ceased from January 1994 to November 2004 initially due to low nickel prices and subsequently due to the anti-mining protesters. It then underwent a Care and Maintenance period from 2005 to 2015 before being authorized on July 1, 2014, by the MGB to dispose of nickel ore stockpiles. From May to August 2016, five shipments were made until shipments were suspended. The DENR lifted the suspension of mining operations and extended the term of the MPSA for a period of 15 years through its Order dated March 4, 2022. With the extension of the term of its MPSA and lifting of the suspension of mining operations, HMC is aiming to produce 3.0 M wmt tons of nickel ore annually.

On March 12, 2024, the Project transitioned from care and maintenance to commercial mining operations.
