Kanhan Area lies within the Pench–Kanhan Gondwana coal basin (Chhindwara MP), where multiple Permian coal seams occur (Barakar–Motur formations). The coal is generally medium-grade coking type.Sharda Geological BlockThe area under consideration lies within Ambara Sukri rationalized block. The Rationalized blocks consists of Ambara, Sharda, Sukri, Chikalmau, Tatarwara & Ambara Sukri sub-Blocks and dip side area up to approximately 600m depth line.Strike & DipIn the project area, the altitude of the beds has been deciphered from the floor contour plan of Seam section-IC. The strike of the coal seams is NW –SE in major parts of the block with minor swings. But in north eastern (sector XI) and north western (sector X) part of block, strike swings from NW-SE to NE-SW. Similarly in eastern part of block, the strike of coal seams shows E-W direction. However, local undulations and drag effects can be seen near the faults. The dip of the coal seams in general is towards north-east and varies in the eastern part of the block to NNE –SSW. The gradient of the project area ranges from 1 in 7 to 1 in 11 and the dip varies from 5° to 8° northerly.Coal SeamsIn Sharda Geological Block, Seam-I occurs in 3 sections designated as Seam section-IA, Seam section-IB and Seam section-IC in the descending order. Shale, Carbonaceous Shale and Shaly Coal form the parting between the seam sections. At some places Seam sections IA and IB get merged.Seam section-IA has a thickness range of 0.70m to 2.93m with the mean being 1.32m. Parting with the underlying Seam section-IB is from 0.30m to 1.16m with the mean being 0.46m. Seam section-IB has a thickness range of 0.53m to 2.04m with the mean being 1.25m. Parting with the underlying Seam section-IC is from 0.50m to 2.78m with the mean being 1.31m. Seam section-IC has a thickness range of 0.50m to 2.59m with the mean being 1.41m.All the Seam sections of Seam-I are having less average thicknesses where working each Seam section independently with the present available technology is not possible. Therefore, it has been proposed in the R.P.R. for Sharda U/G Mine to work the combined seam section of IB + Parting + IC as compared to IA + Parting + IB.The practice in the neighbouring underground mines is also to keep the Seam section IC as floor and working Seam section-IC + Parting + Seam section-IB as a combined seam section.
