Summary:

Chandrapur lies in the Wardha Valley coalfield, characterized by a single thick coal seam (often called the composite seam) that extends across the area. This seam is notably thick – generally 14 to 19 meters of coal, typically split into multiple subsections by dirt bands. In some blocks the composite seam is subdivided (e.g. Sections A, B, C, D) but effectively forms one major mineable unit.

The seam dips gently (gradient ~1 in 8 to 1 in 10) and lies under cover of mostly sedimentary overburden (part of the Permian Barakar formation) and a thin top soil layer.

The coal is sub-bituminous, non-coking and of Grade G8–G10 (gross calorific value around 4,500–5,000 kcal/kg).

The coal is sub-bituminous, non-coking and of Grade G8–G10 (gross calorific value around 4,500–5,000 kcal/kg). For example, Bhatadi mine’s coal is about G9 grade (~4657 kcal/kg) and Durgapur’s seam is reported at G10 grade (~4581 kcal/kg). The seam dips gently (gradient ~1 in 8 to 1 in 10) and lies under cover of mostly sedimentary overburden (part of the Permian Barakar formation) and a thin top soil layer.

The geological reserve base in this area is substantial. Durgapur Extension Deep OC alone has about 49–50 million tonnes (Mt) of geological reserves, of which ~47 Mt are mineable (95% extraction planned). Bhatadi’s expansion block holds 58.87 Mt total geological reserves with ~45.53 Mt extractable (˜77% recovery). The Padmapur mine has an estimated 26 Mt in-situ resources, with around 11 Mt remaining as mineable reserves in the current project stage.

The underground Rayatwari mines tap the same thick seam from below; however, large portions of those reserves were already partially extracted historically.

Summary:

Contractor crushes coal from opencast mine, using hired semi-mobile crusher and than discharging 100 mm size crushed coal through belt conveyor.

Processing

Summary:

Coal processing in Chandrapur Area is limited to crushing and sizing. There are no washing or beneficiation steps since the coal’s end-use (power generation) does not require washed coal.
