Summary:

Orient Area is located in the Ib Valley Coalfields, Jharsuguda district of Odisha state of India. Three coal horizons i.e. Lajkura, Rampur & IB Seam occur in Lajkura-Il geological block of IB Valley Coalfields. The seams occur in Barakar & Karharbari formation of Lower Gondwana. Only Hingir Rampur Seam is being mined through Orient Colliery 1&2 UG and Hirakhand Bundia mines.

The general strike of Hingir Rampur seam and bed is N 10° W and the true dip of the seam is S 80° W. The average thickness of Hingir Rampur Seam varies from 25 m to 30 m including bands. The seam is interbanded with coal, shaly coal, carbonaceous shale and shale. The vertical parting between Lajkura horizon and Rampur horizon is about 90 m. The Hingir Rampur seam has been split into four sub-seams namely Hingir Rampur seam-I, Hingir Rampur seam-II, Hingir Rampur seam-III and Hingir Rampur seam -IV having thickness of about 2.59 m, 2.22 m, 2.69 m and 3 m respectively. The parting between Hingir Rampur seam-I and Hingir Rampur seam-II is 3 m, the parting between Hingir Rampur seam-II and Hingir Rampur seam-III is 13 m and the parting between Hingir Rampur seam-III and Hingir Rampur seam-IV is 3.5 m. The average grade of coal is G-13. The depth of cover varies from 25 m to 220 m and it is likely to increase on the dip side of the property.
