SnapshotThe Juruti bauxite mine represents an established mining operation which includes:
- Bauxite beneficiation plant;
- Mine waste facilities including tailings thickening lagoons and tailings disposal ponds.

The implementation of the High Voltage Power Infrastructure project underway at the Juruti bauxite mine. This project will enable the existing diesel fired power generators to be removed from service once power is being supplied from the grid. A new 51-km transmission line will serve the mine and the port, integrating the region into the National Interconnected System (SIN).

Current mine plans include further exploration throughout all areas where Alcoa has mining permits to sustain future production.

On November 7, 2024, Alcoa announced the suspension of bauxite shipments from its Juruti mine, due to a vessel stranded in the channel near the port obstructing transportation. This disruption poses significant challenges for global alumina supplies.

The Juruti bauxite mine is owned and operated by Alcoa World Alumina Brasil Ltda. (AWAB), a subsidiary of Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals (AWAC).

Prior to Alcoa’s acquisition of Alumina Limited on August 1, 2024, Alcoa Corporation and Alumina Limited owned 60% and 40%, respectively, of AWAC, an unincorporated global joint venture consisting of a number of affiliated entities that own, operate, or have an interest in bauxite mines and alumina refineries, as well as an aluminum smelter, in seven countries.

Upon completion of the acquisition by Alcoa, Alumina Limited and, as a result, the operations held by the AWAC joint venture, including the Juruti bauxite deposit and mine, became wholly-owned by Alcoa Corporation.

Summary:

The bauxite deposit of the Juruti bauxite mine consist of several lateritic bauxite plateaus which exist over a large lateral extent (several km) in comparison to the total thickness of the deposit (typically up to 20 m below surface).

Juruti is a lateritic bauxite deposit formed through a combination of intense weathering and geochemical alteration, leaching by meteoric waters, and accumulationof alumina and iron-rich horizons. Periodic erosion and redeposition is also known to have occurred.

The lateritic deposits have originated from the Alter-do-Chao Formation; Cretaceous fluvial-lacustrine deposits of sandstone, siltstones, mudstones, and quartzbreccia. Weathering and alteration of these parent rocks is estimated to have taken place during the Eocene.

Bauxitization has occurred through the formation of gibbsite crystals which form massive bauxite horizons which exist as plateaus across the Juruti region. Incomparison to their lateral extent over tens of kilometers, the overall thickness of the bauxite deposits are relatively thin being only several metres thick.

Mineralization
Bauxite mineralization principally occurs as microcrystalline gibbsite (Al(OH)3), along with accessory minerals of hematite (Fe2O3), goethite (FeO(OH)), kaolinite (Al2Si2O5(OH)4),and anatase (TiO2). The mineralization of each of the stratigraphic horizons observed across the Juruti deposits are classified based on a combination of visual inspection during drilling and sampling, and the results of chemical analysis.
