SnapshotMeandu Mine is an open-cut coal operation that supplies coal exclusively to the adjacent Tarong Power Stations. The mine consists of four active pits and maintains a continuous coal supply to the power stations via a long, dedicated conveyor belt system.

The proposed King 2 East (K2E) Project extension will ensure an ongoing, secure supply of coal for the Tarong power stations, helping Stanwell maintain reliable electricity generation for Queensland.

The project will expand Meandu Mine’s surface rights area by approximately 187 hectares, a 7% increase in total operational land area, all within the mining lease boundary.

Stanwell is progressing regulatory approvals with the goal of commencing mining in the K2E Project area in 2026.

Summary:

The Meandu Mine is in Late Triassic Tarong beds (the host unit for the coal seams mined at Meandu Mine). Mining Lease (ML) 6674 overlies part of the Triassic-aged Tarong Basin, a north north-west/south south-east trending elongate pull-apart basin. In the area of the Meandu Mine the maximum width of the Tarong Basin is in the order of 9 to 10 km.

Meandu Mine is located near the centre of the Tarong Basin, which has been interpreted by Flood and Garces (1986) to be formed by a dextral, strike-slip, pull-apart mechanism. Within and surrounding the Meandu Mine, areas of the Triassic sediments have been overlain by Tertiary Main Range Volcanics and thin layers of Quaternary surface sediments that are restricted to the existing drainage lines.

The stratigraphic sequence underlying the K2E ASA is generally the same as that encountered at the Meandu Mine. Geology at Meandu Mine comprises (from the surface downwards): Quaternary alluvium, Tertiary basalt, spoil, regolith and upper Triassic coal measures (the Tarong beds) with sandstone/siltstone between the coal seams.

Coal seams
The coal seams at Meandu Mine generally dip gently to the south and south-east at less than five degrees from horizontal. The seam sequence (top down) in the Meandu deposit is:
• Ace Seam;
• King Seam, commencing at a depth of 20 to 60 m below the Ace Seam;
• Queen Group (A to J Seams) subdivided as Queen Upper and Lower Seam packages with Queen Upper commencing from a further 30 to 50 m below the King Seam;
• coal seams below the Queen Seams, which are not mined at site (including Joker, Prince, Baron, Duke and Duchess (followed by a set of inconsistent low-quality plies at greater depth).

Main faults, typically trending parallel to the long-axis of the Tarong Basin, occur along the eastern margin of the basin disrupting the continuity of coal seams within ML6674. Vertical throws have been interpreted up to 80 m in height.
