SnapshotTahmoor Coal Mine is an underground coal mine consisting of the Tahmoor North Mining Domain (Western Domain) and Tahmoor South Mining Domain.

In February 2025, GFG Alliance ceased production and over 450 workers were placed on unpaid leave. As of the end of June 2025, the mine was still not operating.

GFG Alliance has reached an agreement with creditors that envisages the sale of all or part of the mine for A$800 million to cover debts, including the Whyalla steel mill.

The MEU union has expressed support for the sale of the mine, provided that jobs are preserved. At least two consortiums have already submitted inquiries for the mine, one of which had a viewing trip, but the first offer was rejected.

According to MEU representatives, the mine remains economically viable - it has updated infrastructure, a production reserve of 30–40 years, a reliable CHP plant. However, there is no clear timeline for the completion of the sale, and it is unclear when production will resume.

Summary:

Tahmoor Mine lies in the southern part of the Permo-Triassic Sydney Basin, within which the main coal bearing sequence is the Illawarra Coal Measures.

Coal is mined from within the Bulli seam. The Bulli seam coal is predominantly a hard-coking coal.

In the Tahmoor South Project area, the Bulli coal seam is located approximately 370 to 430 m below the surface and is approximately 1.8 to 3.3 m thick.

Two major fault zones exist in the Project area: the Nepean Fault and the Central Fault zones. The presence of these fault zones has constrained the extent of longwalls and defined the mining domain for the proposed development. The Nepean Fault zone is the most significant geological feature. This fault is approximately 350 m wide and trends north-south along the eastern boundary of the area. The Central Fault zone is a smaller fault and trends along the western and southern boundaries.
