The Wilkie Creek mine has been on care and maintenance since 2014. Mining operations at the Wilkie Creek project recommenced in early 2023.
New Wilkie Energy has reached a production of bypass coal now crushed and sized. Once complete, the fixed coal handling preparation plant will be able to maximise yield from the coal, supplying a steady flow of high-quality low ash product.
January 4, 2024 - Administrators from BRI Ferrier have been appointed to entities within the New Wilkie Energy Group following falling coal prices.
One of the entities that has entered administration is the company charged with overseeing the Wilkie Creek coal mine near Dalby in the Sturt Basin, Queensland.
Over the period of administration, they will determine whether to sell the mine or whether a debt restructuring deal is viable. |

Summary:
The coal typically occurs in two intervals of interbedded mudstone, siltstone and sandstone, with lenticular coal seams up to 6m thick. The intervals are separated by approximately 100m of sandstone.
Walloon Coal Measures of Middle Jurassic age, dipping gently to the south and south-west; the Wilkie Creek Mine covers the former Kogan, Braemar, and Tarcoola deposits; four principal coal seams are present: Macalister 1 — 3.5m average thickness; Macalister 2 — 3.5m; Macalister 3 — 1.5m; Macalister 4 — 1.5m. The seams coalesce in various combinations to an aggregate thickness ranging between 9–11.5m.
Summary:
The Wilkie Creek Mine is an open-cut coal mine.
The Wilkie Creek mine has been on care and maintenance since 2014. Mining operations at the Wilkie Creek project recommenced in early 2023.
Wilkie Creek mine has two active pits, namely A and B. The blasting activities take place in Pit B in a hard cap rock band and the fresh mudstone/siltstone ‘greys’ areas. Approximately 25% of the overburden at Wilkie Creek is blasted, with the remainder being weak freediggable material.
Fleet
New machinery continues to be commissioned and mobilised as New Wilkie Energy increases production.
Wilkie Creek energy (NWE) mobilised one of the new Komatsu HD1500-8’s, it is now in use, and we have two more arriving shortly which will be operational in early July. We anticipate another three of these dump trucks being delivered by the end of 2023. These 150-tonne class trucks are matched to wheel loaders used for the thin seam separation of coal and partings. They will be deployed for transporting coal from the pit to the ROM.
Another significant piece of equipment recently commission is the Epiroc D65 down-the-hole drill rig.
Also scheduled for commissioning 2023 year will be four new Cat 793F dump trucks each with a capacity to carry 240 tonnes, the first of which is arriving in July. These dumptrucks will be matched to the new 600-tonne class Hitachi EX5600-7 excavator scheduled for delivery midSeptember.
