East Tennessee consists of a processing plant and three underground zinc mines: Young, Coy and Immel. Ore from the three mines is processed into zinc concentrate at the Young mine site.
In July 2019, Nyrstar’s operating business became majority owned by Trafigura. Production numbers have not been publicly available since then. |

Summary:
East Tennessee Mines are comprised of three operating mines: Coy, Immel and Young, located approximately 30 kilometres north-east of Knoxville, Tennessee. Zinc mineralisation occurs in Mississippi Valley Type (‘MVT’) deposits as open-space fillings of breccias and fractures within limestones and dolomites.
Summary:
The East Tennessee complex consists of a processing plant and three underground zinc mines: Young, Coy and Immel.
Immel Mine operates two 12-hour production shifts, seven days per week. The mine extracts lead-zinc ore by blasting. Miners use front end loaders to load the material into haul trucks and transport the ore to a hopper. The ore is fed from the hopper into a chute. Locomotives are used to move the train cars under the chute where ore is loaded and then transported to the underground dump. The ore is unloaded into a skip hoist that transports the ore to the surface.
The Coy mine is roughly 1,200 ft deep. Annually it produces in the range of 600,000 metric tons of ore that is shipped out by transit truck. That ore is processed in a plant nearby and the concentrate is then shipped to Middle Tennessee. When Nyrstar purchased the mine, it was described as a mine utilizing the Room-and-pillar method.
