SnapshotThe Sunrise Project is an in-situ oil sands operation.

The project targets bitumen hosted in the Wabiskaw–McMurray Formation.

Bitumen is produced using Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD), an in-situ thermal recovery method appropriate for the deep reservoir setting. Produced bitumen typically has an API gravity of approximately 7–9 degrees.

Sunrise is a stable producing asset with ongoing optimization and growth potential supported by a large, long-life resource base. Sunrise optimization is expected to continue through 2028, supporting production growth of approximately 15–20 Mbbls/d between 2024 and 2028. The 2026 development program focuses on the addition of new well pads in the high-quality eastern development area. Looking beyond the current plan, the project’s extensive resource base provides flexibility and creates opportunities for further production growth beyond 2028.

Summary:

Sunrise produces from the McMurray formation, with a reservoir depth of up to 250 metres.

Sunrise produces from the McMurray formation. Bitumen from the McMurray Formation has an average API gravity of approximately 7-9 degrees.

The McMurray Formation is a succession of sands and shale deposited in a fluvial estuarine environment that developed in a major valley that was cut into Devonian-aged limestone. Sands were deposited in tide-influenced channels and the McMurray Formation is variably saturated with water, bitumen and natural gas.
