SnapshotHail Creek Open Cut extracts coking and thermal coal from a large-scale Permian coal basin.

Hail Creek Coal Holdings Pty Ltd., on behalf of Hail Creek Joint Venture, has proposed an amendment to its current approvals for developing the Hail Creek Eastern Margin Extension.

The Project is proposed to expand Hail Creek’s mine disturbance footprint though is not seeking to increase the mine’s existing annual tonnage limit nor extend mining operations (due to end 2040). The extent of the existing Kemmis Pit, Carrinyah Pit and Exevale Pit are proposed to be amended to reflect the new mine plan. In addition to these extensions, a new pit (Homevale) is also proposed. The Project will include the realignment of a haul road that is currently within the authorised disturbance area to a newly proposed area which will result in less disturbance.

  • Sedimentary

Summary:

The coal deposit is part of the Bowen Basin, a significant Permian coal basin stretching 600 kilometres long and 250 kilometres wide. Coal is mined from two seams; the Elphinstone Seam, with an average thickness of 6.4 metres and the Hynds Seam, averaging 8.3 metres in thickness.

The Project is located within the Hail Creek Syncline, consisting of Permian to Triassic age sediments, discontinuously overlain by Quaternary alluvial sediments associated with Hail Creek and its tributaries. The Hail Creek Syncline is aligned to the south-southeast and is approximately 30 km long and 7 km wide (AGE, in prep). The syncline is asymmetric, dipping up to 30° on the eastern limb and up to 15° on the western limb. An indicative schematic cross section of the Hail Creek Syncline.
