SnapshotThe Mettiki Complex comprises the Mountain View mine located in Tucker County and a preparation plant located near the city of Oakland in Garrett County.

The Mountain View mine produces low/medium-sulfur coal, which is transported by truck either to the Mettiki preparation plant for processing for shipment into the metallurgical market, or directly to the coal blending facility at the Virginia Electric and Power Company Mt. Storm Power Station.

As of Jan. 29, 2026, a series of planned and unplanned outages at a key customer’s plant negatively impacted their demand in 2025. Alliance has recently been informed that customers are not in a position to commit to purchasing any additional tons for the foreseeable future.

Mettiki expects to fulfill its existing contractual commitments in March 2026, primarily from existing inventory. Production will immediately cease, giving Mettiki time to evaluate its options concerning the mine’s future and the exact timing for permanent closure.

Summary:

The Mettiki Coal Mine is in the southwest corner of Garrett County, Maryland on the Appalachian Plateau and is part of the Upper Potomac Coalfield. The region consists primarily of generally gently folded consolidated sedimentary shale, siltstone, and sandstone units. It is in an area of alternating synclines (Pennsylvanian outcrops) and anticlines (Devonian outcrops) oriented in northeast to southwest directions, with the mine located in a syncline along the Upper Potomac River basin. Coal is extracted from the Pennsylvanian Upper Freeport coal seam.
