SnapshotElikhulu, Pan African’s flagship tailings retreatment operation, is one of the lowest-cost gold mining operations in Southern Africa.

The tailings is deposited onto three TSFs which are being reclaimed in the following order: Kinross (was depleted in the 2023 reporting period), Leslie/Bracken and Winkelhaak. Post their processing, these TSFs will be consolidated into a modern, single, enlarged regional Elikhulu tailings extension facility.

The design of Elikhulu’s TSF entailed a significant expansion and construction effort from 2017 and thereafter phase 1 expansion during 2019. This expansion coincided with the construction of the plant and its associated infrastructure. As part of the phase 2 expansion, the existing Kinross TSF footprint will be reutilised once the reclamation process is completed. Phase 2 of the Elikhulu TSF was commissioned in January 2024, and construction is currently underway for phases 3 and 4, constituting the final stages of Elikhulu’s TSF extension.

Summary:

The ore being treated at Elikhulu originated from the previously mined and metallurgically treated Kimberley Reef from the Winkelhaak, Leslie/Bracken and Kinross Mines as part of Evander Mines’ historical operations. The tailings of the treated material were deposited onto three TSFs that will be reclaimed in the following order: Kinross, Leslie/Bracken and Winkelhaak. Post their processing, these TSFs will be consolidated into a modern, single, enlarged regional Kinross tailings extension facility, thus reducing Evander Mines’ environmental footprint and associated environmental impact.

Deposition material of historically treated metallurgical tailings from the Winkelhaak, Leslie/Bracken and Kinross Mines.

The material is confined to the deposition site of historical tailings and approximately 1m beneath the historical footprint. The ore consists of oxidised tailings containing pyrite-associated gold which was not recovered in the initial treatment process.
