Mine Life | 2038 |
Shamva Underground Gold Mine reopened in April 2020 since closure in January 2019.
Today (2023) Shamva is producing 45 000 tonnes of ore per month, a figure that was last achieved in 1910.
Shamva is expecting to invest a total US$126 million in peak funding for the Shamva Hill open pit project. This is quite a big project. That extensive capital input, a significant proportion of it is going into developing a 220 000 tonnes per month processing facility together with a tailing storage plant.
June, 2023 - The Shamva Hill open pit is expected to be fully functional in two years. The project itself has an expected life of 14 years, producing an annual gold production of 2,6 tonnes per year. |

Summary:
Shamva Mine is situated in the Shamva greenstone belt and exploits numerous orebodies which occur within a 300- to 400-m wide Riedel-type shear system. The sub-vertical orebodies are indistinguishable from the host rocks. Mineralisation within the orebodies consists predominantly of pyrite (>90%) with minor sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. Gold is found in contact with the sulphides, often in fractures, and varies significantly in grain size with visible gold commonly intersected in development and underground drilling. Silver occurs with the gold and represents some 50% of gold content.
Simplified Deposit Type - Hydrothermal.
Mining Methods
- Underhand stoping
- Sub-level open stoping (SLOS)
- Longhole stoping
Summary:
The Shamva mine is mined through underground Sublevel Open Stoping mining method applied in Longhole Stoping and Underhand Stoping variants. The variants are utilized to respond to the geometry of the ore body.
The Shamva mine has a Life of Mine of 16 years at a mining rate of 35,000t per month.
Hoisting capacity is 45ktpm.
The 300hp hoist carried 20 people at a go, has a rope circumference of 29mm, length of 700metres and it is going down 480 metres underground to 16 level.
Sub-vertical rock hoist has a 150 horsepower, 2-tonne skip cages, 24mm sized rope.
Shamva Hill Open Pit project
Extensive exploration work is currently taking place; this work is expected to yield a large open cast operation.
Kuvimba Mining House is expecting to invest a total US$126 million in peak funding for the Shamva Hill open pit project. This is quite a big project. That extensive capital input, a significant proportion of it is going into developing a 220 000 tonnes per month processing facility together with a tailing storage plant.
The capital investment will also be channelled towards the pre-production phases required for the open pit. The project itself has an expected life of 14 years, producing an annual gold production of 2,6 tonnes per year.
