Summary:

All mines of the Ballarpur Area are located on the Wardha Valley coalfield.

The Wardha Valley Coalfield (WVC), primarily managed by the Western Coalfield Ltd., is spread across Chandrapur, Yawatmal and Wardha districts in Vidharbha region of Maharashtra. The extent of this coalfield lies in the Latitudes ranging from 20°29'06" N to 20°48'22" N and Longitudes 79°09'15" E to 79°26'39" E.

The Ballarpur 3&4 pits UG mine consists of one seam called Ballarpur seam. The thickness of coal seam varies from 16 to 20 m. The seam has split geologically into three distinct sections in major part of the mine area mainly Section-I, Section -II and Section-III. Section-I is around 1.5 to 2.5 m thick. Section-II varies in thickness from 5 to 7m and is separated from Section-I by a parting of around 2 to 3m. Section-II is being worked in the mine in two distinct horizons namely Top Section and Middle Section. Middle Section is around 2.44m thick and has been developed 0.5 to 1m below the roof of Section-II.

Section-III varies in thickness from 2.5 to 4.5m. The parting between Section-II and Section-III is around 1.5 to 2m. The mine works one horizon referred to as bottom Section along the true floor in Section-III. The general thickness of Bottom Section is 2.5 to 3m.

Ballarpur OC mine
The project is a part of Ballarpur Coal Block, situated on the southern part of the Eastern Limb of anti-clinical structure of the Wardha valley Coalfields. The area is covered by 6 m to 36 m thick detrital mantle. The seam is covered by Kamptee formations and the Barakars. There is a composite coal seam of 5.3. m to 19.3m thickness inter-banded with carbonaceous shale and shale in the area. The strike of the seam is NNE-SSW and the dip varies between 1 in 15 to 1 in 20 towards East.

The structural interpretation of the block is based on the Sub- surface data obtained by boreholes and adjacent Ballarpur Colliery. A thick cover of kamthi is overlapping the Motur and Barakar in the area.

Roof & Floor of the Seam/Section:
The roof of Bottom & Middle Section is Carb. Shale and that of Top Section is coal. The roof of seam is overlain by sand stone.
The floor of Bottom Section that also is of composite seam is sand stone. The floor of middle and top section is carb, shale.

In Ballarpur opencast mine Top and Bottom section was developed exclusively and Middle section was in patches. At the time of drowning of mine the rise side area (from shaft level) was depillared and depillaring and splitting with sand stowing was in progress, below shaft level.

The proposed Gauri-Pauni Expansion OC Mine is dip side extension of existing Gauri-I & II Expn. OC mine and Pauni OC mine in Pauni Combined Geological block located in the south-western part of the eastern limb of the Wardha Valley Coalfield.
