The Bharatpur and Chhendipada coal mines are located in the Talcher Coalfield of Angul district, Odisha.Bharatpur OCP block is created mainly out of three geological blocks viz. Bharatpur, Padma and Kalinga east. In Bharatpur OCP block altogether, 11 coal seams have been regionally correlated viz., seam I of Karharbari Formation and seams II to XI in Barakar Formation. The coal seam II is the lower most coal horizon occurring in Barakar formation. Seam II had been correlated as a combined seam i.e. Seam II in Bharatpur North & Padma block and also is being mined as a single seam in the existing Bharatpur OC mine whose boundary has been re-organized to give additional life to the running mine at a rated capacity of 20 Mty.Bharatpur OCP block is covered by soil varying in thickness generally from 5 m to 16 m. It consists of sandy soil, clay and lateritic soil. The weathered mantle ranges up to 34 m and consists of laterite, sandstone, sandy shale, intercalation of shale and sandstone, carbonaceous shale etc.The coal seams at Bharatpur are shallow and laterally extensive, yielding a very low average stripping ratio of 0.8 cubic meters of overburden per tonne of coal – indicative of thick coal seams near the surface.
