According to the annual BCCL Grade Notification Book, as of 2025, no underground mining work is ongoing in the mines of the Eastern Jharia (EJ) Area Operation. Mining is being carried out using opencast methods.

Summary:

Eastern Jharia Area is situated on the South corner of Jharia Coalfield one of the few areas in the country which has entirely been producing prime coking coal vitally required for the steel and metallurgical industries.

Almost all the seams of Jharia Coalfield emerging from XVIII to I seam are found” in the present working. Geo-mining conditions are extremely difficult - multi-seam workings,h ighly gassy, with geological disturbances such as fault, dyke, intrusions and frequent changing gradient.

There are 20 nos of seams, thickness ranging between 0.08 m to 46.05 m. Grade of coal is ST-I to W-IV.

Seams from VIII A to XIII seam exist within the mines of the Eastern Jharia (EJ) Area Operation.

Bhowra (N&S) Colliery will operate as opencast upto VII seam.
