Amalgamated Joyrampur Colliery is located in the south-eastern part of the Jharia coalfield, and it is situated in Barakar Formation. The soil thickness varies between 1.5 m (GL-6) and 14.2 m (MJ-11). The Talchir formation is also present at the southeastern boundary of the site area. A significant fault (F7-F7), with a maximum displacement of 90 m toward the north, marks the southern limit of the coal bearing formation. The Barakar formation comprises pebbly sandstones, conglomerate, grit, coarse to fine grained sandstones, shales, carbonaceous shales and coal seams. Seams from I to XVI Seam exist within the mine and all the upper seams upto XI/XII seam are under fire within boundary of Amalgamated Joyrampur Colliery. Coal seams XVI to IX/X occur within the Amalgamated Joyrampur Colliery. Seam Thickness minimum 0.25 m and maximum 75.81 m. Seams from I to XVI Seam exist within the mine and all the upper seams upto XI/XII seam are under fire within boundary of Amalgamated Joyrampur Colliery. The general strike of the strata is normally NNW-SSE swinging to N-S covering the major part of the area and E-W in the southern extremity of the area. The beds dip 4° to 12° due WSW, west and north respectively. In the southern part, the small strip where the strike of the formation swings to NNE-SSW and E-W, the gradient of the seam is steeper 40° due of the proximity of the area to the major fault (throw 90 m towards north).
