Summary:
Amalgated Gaslitand Katars Chaitudih Colliery (AGKCC) located in the north central part of the Jharia coalfield, and includes rocks of Barakar formation which is overlain by thin layers of sandy soil and clay. Based on available borehole data, thickness of soil ranges between 3.23m. (KC-15) to 13.95 m. (AP-92) with average thickness of about 7.89 m.
The rocks of Barakar formations can be divided into the top argillaceous strata-fine to medium grained with repeated intercalation of shales and lenses of sandstones as observed in the Quarries of seam XIV and XIII and bottom arenaceous strata-coarse grained to pebbly. Coal seams XVI Top to I (Middle) occur within the project area and seams XVI Top to X for their extraction by opencast method. Incrop of seam XII touches the north-western corner of the colliery boundary.
Strike & Dip
The intersecting structural details of the area explored are repetition of outcrops of seams by major strike-fault. The general strike of the strata is generally N65°W – S65°E. The dip direction is generally towards South direction and its amount generally varies from 3° to 16°.
Faults
Throw of these faults varies from 10m to 65 m.
Coal seams XVIT to I (Middle) occur within the colliery . Incrop of seam XII touches the north-western corner of the colliery boundary. Seam IX and VIIIB has not been intersected in any borehole within the leasehold. Seam XV is splited into XV Top and XV Bottom, and seam II is splited into II Top, II Mid and II Bottom.
As per the GR of Kumari OCP, seams XVIT, XVIB, XV, XIV, XIII, XII, XI, X exhibit good coking characteristics and have been categorized as coking in the area where UVM is > 20%, seam VIIIC, VIIIA, VIII Top, VIII Bot, VII, V/VI and IV have been considered both Coking as well as non-coking and seam III, IITop, IIMid, IIBot and I M have been considered non-coking where UVM is < 20%. within the colliery boundary.
To arrive at the in-band thickness of the coal seams as per opencast norms, all combustible dirt bands up to 1.00 m thickness occurring within the seam have been included. Dirt bands having thickness more than 1.00 m occurring within the seam have been excluded.
Presently, seams from top to XIII are being worked by Open cast method. Seam XVIT, XVIB, XV, XIV, XIII, have been worked in the past primarily by underground method and also by opencast method at places in the past and XII, XI, X, VIIIC, VIIIA and VII have been worked in the past by underground method. Underground working of seam X is in two sections. Thin and impersistent seams such as seam XVA, VIIIB, VII, II Top, II Bot, I Top, and I Mid have not been exploited. Seam IX is not developed in the leasehold area.
