SnapshotGevra Area Operation includes only one mine - Gevra opencast mine (Gevra Expansion OC Project), which is the biggest coal mine of India.

The mine has a strike length of around 10 km and a breadth of 4 km. Mining using eco-friendly, blast-free technology in the form of a surface miner. It also has First Mile Connectivity (FMC), the system of coal transportation aimed to replace the existing road transport of coal from pitheads to dispatch points with seamless mechanized transportation system like conveyor belts.

On March 5, 2024, Gevra mine was granted environmental clearance to expand production capacity. The expansion will position Gevra as the largest coal mine in Asia. Life of mine will be 16 years.

As of March 31, 2025, the Gevra OC Expansion Project is in progress with a percentage achievement of 59.26%. Project is likely to be completed in FY 2025-26.

The Gevra Area Operation is operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), which is a state-owned coal mining company.

The coal mines, which are nationalized in 1971 and 1973 were put under administrative control of CIL in 1975. CIL operates under the guidance of the Ministry of Coal, Government of India.

Summary:

The Gevra block is capped with 4 m to 20 m thick soil cover, the rock exposures are very scanty. The upper barakar formation of thickness more than 250 m in this block is fine to coarse grained sand stone with shale intercalation and coal seams.

The upper and lower Kusmunda seams are the two most important coal seams. The seam thickness of upper Kusmunda is 24.94 to 28.85 m. Lower Kusmunda top split is 27.96 m to 45.20 m and bottom split is 3.14 m to 16.16 m.
