SnapshotThe Moanda mine is among the world’s richest manganese deposits. The commercial ore content averages about 45%.

Despite a market slowdown in late 2024, the new facilities—especially the modular washing plants in Okouma and the connecting conveyor system—helped improve ore quality and enhance upstream competitiveness amid declining demand and prices.

In June 2025, the Government of Gabon announced a ban on the export of unprocessed manganese ore starting from January 1, 2029, in order to encourage local processing. Eramet stated its willingness to cooperate with the authorities and to preserve the 10,460 jobs linked to Comilog and Setrag.

In October 2024, due to market oversupply, the company temporarily suspended mining operations for three weeks, although sales and shipments continued.

Summary:

Moanda is mining high-grade manganese tabular deposits, located under low overburden layer and formed by the weathering of volcano-sedimentary rocks. Manganese ore is found in 5 plateaus around Moanda. They are Bangombe, Okouma, Bafoula, Massengo and Yeye, the most important being Okouma and Bangombe. The manganese ore in the mine is a result of Supergene Sulphide enrichment of the Precambrian Francevillian sediments.
