SnapshotMogale Tailings Retreatment (MTR) operation (plant) has been constructed to process gold tailings deposited onto the Mogale Cluster and Soweto Cluster.

MTR operation’s metallurgical plant was successfully commissioned with its inaugural gold pour in October 2024, with steady-state production achieved by December 2024. Pan African has approved the expansion of the MTR operation’s metallurgical plant capacity to 1,000ktpm, which is expected to be commissioned during FY26.

While Pan African is initially focusing on the Mogale Gold TSFs, it is envisaged that the Soweto Cluster TSFs will eventually be brought into the MTR project and extend its life. Operations will start up on the Soweto Cluster TSFs in around 2030 and continue through into the early 2040s.

As of June 2025, Pan African is finalising a feasibility study, which will advise if a stand-alone processing plant and operation for the Soweto Cluster material will be economical.

Summary:

Mineralisation style: Deposition material of historically treated metallurgical tailings from reefs mined at WRCM, Luipaardsvlei Gold Mine, Rand Leases and DRD Gold.

The reefs are arenaceous conglomeratic sedimentary rocks of the Archaean age and are generally considered as ancient river placers. These reefs are frequently less than a metre thick and characterised by abundant pyrite, which may comprise up to 5% of the reef, as well as flyspeck and/or seam carbon/kerogen. These three components display a strong spatial correlation with the gold mineralisation, which is rarely visible, in the 10-to-20-micron range.

Mineralisation characteristics: The material is confined to the deposition sites of historical tailings and approximately 1m beneath the historical footprints. The ore consists of oxidised tailings containing pyrite-associated gold which was not recovered in the initial treatment process.
