SnapshotSouth Walker Creek PCI is one of the highest performing PCI products in a steel blast furnace given its low volatility matter.

The expansion of South Walker Creek was approved during 2023 year and will see ROM mining and CHPP washing capacity increase from 8.0Mt per annum (Mtpa) to an annualised mining rate of 9.4Mtpa by the third quarter of 2024, and achieve steady state saleable coal production of 7.0Mtpa from early 2025.

The Mulgrave Resource Area 2C (MRA2C) project progressed well in 2023, and is ahead of delivery schedule and below budget. It will allow us to access lower strip ratio, higher value ROM coal in early 2025.

Summary:

The South Walker Creek (SWC) deposit is situated within the Nebo Synclinorium on the eastern flank of the Carborough Syncline. Permian coal measures dip westerly at five to ten degrees, with dips steepening in the north in the Kemmis deposit. Locally the principal economic seam is the Main Seam, which splits to the north and south into Main Tops and Main Bottoms. The Main Seam is believed to be equivalent with the Elphinstone Seam (Leichardt) and upper part of the Hynds Seam, and extends over two kilometres in strike length in the south, comprising 10.5 to 14m of mainly dull to dull banded coal with minor mudstone partings. The Hynds Seam in South Walker has deteriorated to a sub-economic banded seam and displays seam splitting relationships present at South Walker Creek.

The Hynds Seam consists of three components: two coal seams (Upper & Lower); and the Yarrabee Tuff, and is equivalent to the Vermont seam, mined at the Poitrel Deposit. The Hynds Seam lies between 15 and 60 metres below the main seams, at an average of 32 metres, and varies in thickness across the deposit and tends to be heavily stone banded.

The Hynds Upper (HT) split is generally thin (one to two metres) and contains few stone bands. Underlying Yarrabee Tuff is commonly altered to clay and tends to be soft and puggy in nature with an average thickness of 0.5 metres and is problematic for coal washing if mined. Hynds Lower Seam (HB) tends to be substantially thicker (two to nine metres) than the upper seam, but contains multiple stone bands. The Hynds seam is only occasionally intersected, not because it is not present, but due to a lack of drill holes of sufficient depth.

Dimensions
Resources in the Main Seam occur from the southern boundary to the northern boundary of ML4750. The subcrop length in ML4750 of the Main Seam is 42 km length. At the widest point of the leasehold, the Main Seam extends for 5.2 km from subcrop to the edge of the lease boundary. In the narrow very northern part of the lease, the subcrop to lease boundary distance is ~580 m.

Resources contained in the Hynds seam are confined to the northern part of the deposit, where it extends over two distinct areas, 3.2 and 2.4 km length.

Production

Production numbers of 6 million tonnes of clean coal have been calculated on the basis of 4.0 million tonnes of production for the period 1 May 2022 to 31 December 2022 (due to the transfer of ownership of South Walker Creek to Stanmore).

Production numbers of 8.1 million tonnes of coal mined have been calculated on the basis of 5.4 million tonnes of coal mined for the period 1 May 2022 to 31 December 2022 (due to the transfer of ownership of South Walker Creek to Stanmore).
