Summary:
Beckley is extracting high quality, Low-Volatile metallurgical coal in the Pocahontas No. 3 seam.
The Pocahontas No. 3 coal bed is within the Lower Pennsylvania Pocahontas Formation of the Pottsville Group. Where greater than 1.17 ft (14 in) in thickness, it underlies all or parts of Wyoming, McDowell, Raleigh, Summers, Mercer, Greenbrier, and Fayette Counties in West Virginia, and parts of Wise, Dickenson, Buchanan, Scott, Russell, and Tazewell Counties in adjacent Virginia, an area within the central part of the Appalachian Plateaus. The eastern limit of the coal bed is along the Allegheny structural front. The western minable limit of the coal bed is in the subsurface and was selected where the thickness of the coal bed is less than 1.17 ft (Wood and others, 1983). The Pocahontas No. 3 coal bed is, in general, a high-rank, low-volatile bituminous, low-ash, low-sulfur coal that was once considered a standard for metallurgical coal (McColloch, 1995).

Summary:
Beckley is extracting high quality, Low-Vol metallurgical coal in the Pocahontas No. 3 seam.
Beckley is operates employed Room-and-Pillar mining method with continuous miners.
In room-and-pillar mining, a network of rooms is cut into the coal seam, leaving a series of pillars of coal to support the roof of the mine. Continuous miners are used to cut the coal and shuttle cars are used to transport the coal to a conveyor belt for further transportation to the surface. The pillars generated as part of this mining method can constitute up to 40% of the total coal in a seam. Higher seam recovery rates can be achieved if retreat mining is used. In retreat mining, coal is mined from the pillars as workers retreat. As retreat mining occurs, the roof is allowed to collapse in a controlled fashion.
The mine operates four sections utilizing six continuous mining machines and produces an average of 10,000 tons/24 hours. The continuous mining sections operate on two production shifts with one maintenance shift five to six days a week. The mining height averages 96 inches. The mine is ventilated by one mine fan (exhausting) with three openings. The fan is Paul’s Fan Company, model PF-72XDS, 120-inch diameter, 2,500 hp and 900 rpm. This fan operates at approximately 6.0 inches of water gauge and moves approximately 1.0 million cubic feet per minute.
