On 28 July 2025, TCML commissioned of a state-of-the-art electric calciner, the first of its kind in the global soda ash industry.

The Magadi plant is expected to double to soda ash capacity.

As of July 2025, TCML has also launched a solar photovoltaic plant, marking a significant shift from Heavy Furnace Oil (HFO)-based calcination to renewable, lowcarbon technologies. The commissioning, which forms part of TCML’s expansion program, positions Tata Chemicals Magadi as a leading player in sustainable industrial practices and brings the company closer to achieving carbon neutrality in line with the Tata Group’s 2045 target.

Summary:

Magadi ward lies in the Great Rift Valley, about 120 km South West of Nairobi at a latitude of 605m (2000 feet) above sea level. Lake Magadi consists of a deep crystalline bed of Trona (the name given to the naturally occurring solid mineral content), which is a mixture of sodium sesquicarbonate, sodium chloride, other sodium salts and clays, together with a small amount of organic matter. The Trona deposit is up to 30 meters thick, and the surface of the lake covers about 80sq.Kms (Omollo, 2013).
