Metalkol RTR operation in the DRC is the world’s second-largest producer of cobalt.
The Metalkol Roan Tailings Reclamation (RTR) Project entails the reclamation of fine-grained copper and cobalt bearing tailings from the Kingamyambo tailings dam and Musonoi/Kasobantu River valley upstream of the Kasobantu Dam and the processing of these tailings to extract copper and cobalt metal.
Metalkol RTR was launched in October 2018 and has reached full Phase 1 production in 2020. It has completed the construction of Phase 2 and is now ramping up to reach the related full capacity. |

Summary:
Since the 1950s previous operators have been releasing tailings into the environment (including the Musonoi River). Over decades this waste material has accumulated into one of the largest tailings deposits in the world.
Summary:
Unlike conventional mining operations which extract primary ore, at Metalkol RTR legacy copper-cobalt tailings are reclaimed and reprocessed. Since the 1950s previous operators have been releasing these tailings into the environment (including the Musonoi River).
The copper and cobalt tailings ore will be mined from the Kingamyambo tailings dam using hydrosluicing, or hydraulic monitoring (high-pressure water canon). Ore will be reclaimed from the Musonoi /Kasobantu tailings dam sections using cutter head suction dredges mounted on either dredge barges or amphibious excavators.
The tailings mined from both sites will then be transferred to the processing plant as a slurry via a pipeline and pumping. Waste products, or residue, will be pumped to the purpose-built residue storage facility (RSF) for permanent disposal.
Artisanal and small-scale mining is an important livelihood for thousands of people in the Kolwezi region, but this sub-sector is often associated with practices that are typically unsafe and involve human rights violations. Metalkol does not source or purchase from any other sources including other large-scale mining or ASM and therefore can control the material entering our product and supply chain.
