Capcoal is part of Capcoal Operations and comprises opencast operations at Lake Lindsay and Oak Park.
In December 2022, the State Department of Resources granted a mining lease for Anglo American’s Lake Lindsay Coal Expansion.
The Lake Lindsay Extension is a natural progression of neighboring Lake Lindsay Opencut Mine, which is a part of the Capcoal Mine Complex. |

Capcoal complex is a joint venture between Mitsui Coal Holdings and Anglo American who is the operator of the mine.
Lake Lindsay and Aquila are owned by the Capcoal Joint Venture and Oak Park is owned by the Roper Creek Joint Venture.
Owing to the differing ownership structure, the attributable shareholding of Capcoal OC (Lake Lindsay and Oak Park) is determined annually using the proportion of the saleable tonnes in the individual pits. The calculated ownership percentage therefore varies each year due to differing production schedules.
In 2023, Anglo American's Ownership percentage in Capcoal Operation was 79.5% for Capcoal (OC) and 70.0% for Aquila (UG).

Summary:
The project is located on the north-western flank of the Bowen Basin, a sedimentary basin comprising Permian to Triassic age geology.
The majority of coal is mined from the German Creek Formation, which contains five coal seam intervals known as the German Creek, Corvus, Tieri, Aquila and Pleiades seams.
In these areas, the creeks are typically incised into the landscape exposing the underlying rock in the creek bed and banks. Where present, there is typically less than 5 m of alluvium in the creek beds. Floodplain alluvial deposits are localised to the inside of meander bends and areas where the creek is less incised. In these areas the floodplain alluvium typically ranges from a few centimetres to 4 m thick. Alluvium is not present outside this localised area of creek and floodplain deposits.

Summary:
The Capcoal complex open cut mine (Lake Lindsay and Oak Park Mine) is an established operation with a long history of open cut mining producing between 5 and 6.0Mt of ROM per year. The Lake Lindsay mine currently produces approximately 4 Mt ROM per year, and the natural progression is to continue mining down dip into the adjacent MLA area.
Lake Lindsay Expansion
The State Department of Resources granted a mining lease (ML) for Anglo American’s Lake Lindsay Coal Expansion.
The proposed mining operations will be integrated with the existing mine and Lake Lindsay’s mining operations will ultimately progress into the project area as the operation continues mining down dip.
Mining will be undertaken using Lake Lindsay’s existing mining equipment and associated infrastructure. No change to the mining process is proposed. The project will continue to use existing drill & blast, draglines, bulldozers and truck and shovel operations to extract coal resources from the Tralee, Middlemount and Pisces seams of the Rangal Coal Measures.
Annualised production of 5.6 Mtpa is expected during the proposed life-of-mine schedule. During the term of this 5-year plan essential powerline and road changes are required to allow for mining to progress from the existing operation into the MLA area. Although the first coal is scheduled to occur in 2028.
There is no change proposed to the open cut mining method, which consists of burden (waste r ........
